Jo Golding – Multimedia Journalism Work

my blog sharing a little bit of everything I enjoy

Evaluation of audio assessment

For the audio assessment, I created a fashion trend podcast and a travel interview. I came up with the idea for the podcast through articles online about how Kate Middleton’s clothes sell out within the hour and I wanted to talk to someone who would have interesting opinions about this. I came up with the idea for the interview as I thought about the upcoming long summer holiday for students and know that travelling is often a popular option with what to do over this break from university. However, this does not have to apply just to students as it could apply to anyone who is interested in going travelling.

The brief was to create “a three-minute audio podcast, with a short piece of introductory online text” and “two-minute edited interview, with a suitable cue (introductory text) that you’d expect to be read on a radio broadcast.” I think I followed this brief well, as I can imagine a travel interview about someone’s experience of travelling would be something that would be played on a radio station to give people ideas. I also wrote suitable introductions to the audio on the blog to make it clear what I had done.

However, there are some things that I would improve on if I was to do it again. One problem I encountered in this assessment was the audio booth. I set up an interview with a woman who has worked in Topshop and French Connection, which I wanted to include in my podcast. However, the recording did not come out as I had hoped and I unfortunately could not use this footage in the end. If I was to record audio in the future I would make sure to check that I am using the audio booth correctly. I also think my editing skills could be improved on to make the recordings more clear. In terms of things that well, I think I picked an interesting interviewee for the travel interview, who had a lot to say about travelling which was very interesting. Also, the way I laid out the blog posts was clear to read.

I think that I met my aims mostly for this assessment as I wanted to create pieces of audio on topics that I think people would want to hear about. Compared to other audio work, for example on radio stations, I think my work needs improvement in terms of its editing, but the topics I chose were relevant and interesting. I learnt a lot about audio online and how you need to be careful that what you’re recording is going to be clear enough to use. I’ve also learnt a lot about multimedia journalism and the way people use the internet to share information with others.

Travel interview

It’s almost the end of the year for students at universities across the UK. But how will they spend their time over that long summer holiday? I talked to Sam Golding, a transport planner working for Transport For London, who travelled to Ghana in West Africa as part of a volunteer programme.

Sam and other volunteers helped the staff look after children in an orphanage in Ghana.

Fashion podcast

Following the Royal Wedding, Kate Middleton has become one of Britain’s most famous style icons. Despite the wedding taking place last year, whatever she is photographed wearing is still selling out within the hour. Online news websites and fashion blogs devoted to the Duchess have constantly been tracking the rate at which her clothes fly off the shelves since ‘The Duchess Effect’ trend took off. I talked to Emily Duggleby, who is studying fashion buying, about her thoughts on this trend.

The Nannette dress from Reiss sold one every minute.

Research for audio assessment

How I went about creating my podcast…

  • I looked at articles online about Kate Middleton’s style including the article on the Daily Mail, and I also found a style blog that was devoted the The Duchess’ style which showed how much people follow what she wears
  • I wrote and recorded a short introduction to start off the podcast explaining what is was about
  • I interviewed a fashion buying student on her opinions of the trend
  • I also used the audio booth to conduct a phone interview with a woman who used to work in Topshop and French Connection, two shops that Kate Middleton has bought clothes from. Unfortunately, the recording did not come out as I had hoped and I was unable to include it in the podcast
  • I sourced some music from GarageBand to play in the background of my podcast which would fit the royal theme

How I went about creating my interview…

  • I thought about the upcoming summer  holiday and looked at travel websites for ideas for travelling
  • I interviewed Sam, who works for Transport for London, about her travels to Ghana and what she got up to

Evaluation of video assessment

For the video assessment, I decided to create a traditional news package. I read a news story online from my local area and created my own report using my own interviews and background research.

The brief was “to create a report lasting up to three minutes, consisting of an introduction, some interviews, relevant cutaways and a conclusion. The introduction and the conclusion can be either a Piece to Camera (PTC) or voice over/narration.” I think I followed the brief well as I included a Piece to Camera introduction, an interview with a relevant interviewee, some narration and a Piece to Camera conclusion. I also added some background research in the form of statistics to make the report more informative. However, I think something I could have improved on was the length of my video as I did not, unfortunately, prepare enough footage for it last 3 minutes.

I think I met my aims for the assessment, as I wanted to create an interesting, newsworthy report that bounced off of a story in the news. I wanted to take a different angle than any reports I found on the story online. I did this by looking at the dangers of cycling on the road, to take my own angle on the story. I found that cycling on the road is becoming increasingly more dangerous, which is a very serious message behind the news story.

I think in comparison to professional news reports, my video includes all the right material, but more footage was probably needed. Also, on the technical side of things, I think I could improve on my editing skills in putting the video together. However, I think the content of my news report was good and the text introducing the video on my blog clearly informs the reader on what the video is about.

I have learnt a lot about online video and how to put a video together through this assessment, as well as a lot about multimedia journalism. Even though I have a lot more to learn about the editing side, I feel I have more knowledge than I use to have about how to edit footage together. I have gained more knowledge about blogging, and I liked the design side of this in making my blog look as professional as possible. Online journalism is increasingly important as it is where a lot of people turn to for their source of news today and I hope to work more in online journalism in the future.

Dangerous driver jailed for 17 months

A recent story from the BBC news revealed how bus driver Gavin Hill, a 29 year old from Frome, drove his bus deliberately into cyclist Phillip Mead. Gavin Hill was jailed for 17 months and Phillip Mead suffered from a broken leg. Gavin Hill described the incident as “moment of madness”. Cycling is becoming increasingly more dangerous, which has been highlighted by this shocking event.

How I went about creating my news report…

  • I read this news story online about a Bristol bus driver who deliberately drove into a cyclist, on the BBC website
  • I looked at examples of news reports on BBC iPlayer, which are no longer on iPlayer, but which were useful as it showed me the conventions of a news report. This included starting with the main information of the story or a Piece to Camera introduction, an interview, some background research or statistics and a conclusion. This helped me decide what to put in my news report.
  • As I am from Bristol, I went home and interviewed a bus driver about what he thought about the incident
  • I also researched some statistics about the dangers of cycling on the road, including an article on The Guardian’s website called ‘Cyclist deaths rise during recessions, figures suggest’. This gave me some background research to include in my report

A video shared

At www.multimediashooter.com I found a video called ‘The Power of Music’ where Jack Leroy Tueller talks about a World War 2 experience when he played his trumpet to comfort ‘the enemy’.

“I thought to myself, that German sniper’s as scared and lonely as I am. So I thought… I’ll play his love song.”

The next morning, police informed him that a German prisoner wished to talk to him. “When I heard that number that you played I thought about my fiancé… about my mother and dad… and I couldn’t fire.”

There is lots of war content, but to me this video is special. Its simplicity makes it powerful. The camera uses close-ups of Jack’s mouth to show his words are important. The close-up of his medals shows his bravery and the close-up of his trumpet shows his passion. The way the camera stays still on Jack playing his trumpet makes shivers run down my spine, as I can picture him playing it during the war.

Online, people are constantly opening new browsers so I think this video works well online as it’s short and to the point, which makes people want to watch. Its simplicity in not packing too much detail in, I think, is innovative and moving.

Watch the video on YouTube.
